Kale Fortress is located at the entrance of the town’s port and is the sole remaining fortress located in urban area in southern Crete. It’s dated back to the Venetian rule over Crete (13th – 15th century) and is of rectangular fortification type.
During the Ottoman rule, extended repairs were conducted on the building and brought changes both to the inside and the outside of the fortress. Today, it is an archaeological site of Ierapetra open for visitors.
